rateable value REDUCED

Lyttelton Property Appeal The rateable value of a property owned by P. s. Ede in the Lyttelton borough was reduced f ron \ £73 by Mr N. M. Izard, S.M., as a result of an objection heard in the Assessment Court at Lyttelton on April 15. Mr j. R. Woodward appeared for the Lyttelton Borough Council at the hearing. The appellant objected to the increase in the rateable value of his property from £62 (the value m 1957 and 1958, as fixed by the Court on objection in 1957) to the present figure of £B3. A Government valuer called by the borough council had assessed the fair letting value of the property at £2 a week and the annual value at £B3. I n . his reserved decision the Magistrate said he considered the fair letting value would be less than the £2 a week estimated by the valuer, taking into account that the house was built of second-hand timber, that not all papering and lining had been, done, and that there was no garage on the property and no space to build one because of the council’s sewage flushing point.
