WAR AMPUTEES’ BID DEFEATED

Waiving Of Higher Tax On Cars

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 6. A remit recommending “that the 20 per cent, increase in sales tax on new motor cars levied in 1958 be waived by the Government in respect of any new motor car purchased by a war amputee was defeated at today’s annual conference of the New Zealand War Amputees’ Association at New Plymouth.

Mr J. B. Chalmers (Auckland) thought that the increase had been imposed for revenue purposes and was meant to apply to everyone. Mr L. F. Raill (Taranaki), introducing the remit, said the matter of locomotion was of concern to all amputees. Another remit “that the additional tax of Is a gallon levied on petrol in 1958 be refunded by the Government to any war amputee in respect of petrol used by such war amputee on the lodging of a refund claim supported by proper evidence of purchase,” was also defeated.
