AXEMEN COME TO CITY

The brawny, black-singleted axeman who with razorsharp axe sends chips flying and big logs tumbling in a few moments has disappeared from the city scene, and city dwellers only see him competing against his fellow axemen if they happen to go to a county sports meeting. The Industries Fair has arranged to bring axemen together so that the city dwellers can see their skill. On May 23, a Saturday a«nd the last day of the fair, an axemen’s carnival will be held, lasting most of the day. There will be a 12-inch standing chop. a 12-inch underhand chop a 14-inch underhand chop (the main event) and a 14-inch two-cut saw eveoit. as well as exhibition chopping and sawing, and events to be arranged on the day.

Some of the South Island’s best axemen and the leading competitors from Canterbury are expected to be competing at the carnival.
