Sunshine For Winter
"Switch on the sunshine.'** That sounds like words from a song, but not very different words may be used in New Zealand when experiments are completed on the use of the sun’s heat for centrally heating houses. This project is one of the interesting examples given at the Government Court of the work of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
A diagram of a house shows the principle of house-heating by direct radiation from the sun. The roof, with a transparent section, acts as a collector plate, the heat is circulated from a control box down through walls and ceilings and is stored for use in rubble under the house. It all looks simple and sounds simple, and the department is carrying out further experimental work to find the best method of solar heating for New Zealand homes.
