THE STORY OF COAL
Among the displays at the Industries Fair this year is one on coal— New Zealand’s main form of heating. The display has been arranged by the Canterbury Coal Merchants’ Association in conjunction with the National Coal Council, and as well as providing entertainment and giving instructive information about the coal industry,“the theme is: “Order Now.” With the cold wintry weather of earlier in the week the reminder is timely. Anim'ated models of miners working underground, and mechanical shovels cutting away at an opencast face, of a happy cat in front of a bright coal fire and of “King Coal” draw the attention of visitors to the stand.
A series of photographs show how coal is won from the ground, and some of the uses to which coal is put in New Zealand. One serves to answer a constant question put to coal merchants: “Is opencast coal as good as underground?” The photograph shows coal being taken from an opencast face, and immediately below the face is one of the old underground mine galleries. It is the same coal, with opencast mining ensuring that the whole of the seam is used.
