New Zealand Industries Fair 1959

THE 1959 NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRIES FAIR, the I occasion when New Zealand’s manufacturing industry f = presents to the public the latest developments in goods | f made in the country’s factories, will open in Christchurch | f this evening.

The Ferry road buildings, where the Minister of | = Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) will declare the fair officially = = open this evening, have been given a completely “new look” = | on the street frontage, and that new look sets the pattern f | for the rest of the fair, for there are many new displays. | Visitors will see a good representation of New | 1 Zealand manufacturing industries, with some working | f exhibits. The Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, | | which organises and runs the fair, encourages working = 1 displays, but it is not easy for modern factories with | 1 assembly-line production to take away one unit and set it | f up at the fair. But visitors will see some actual manufac- = | turing processes, including brushes being made, a big bread- | f slicing and wrapping machine, an ice-cream machine, and | E a miniature but working wire-rope machine. The Government Court has made a welcome return f | to the fair with an exhibition of the State’s activities in f 1 many fields; the modern home shows new plasticised sur- = f faces, contrasting them with the dismal, dark rooms of | f even 30 years ago; the Army and Navy show armaments E I and aspects of their work; and there is a comprehensive | | display of the history of weapons from the Stone Age to the | f Space Age.

The fair’s primary purpose remains as showing the = f quality of New Zealand-made goods and the skills and | 1 techniques of New Zealand’s factory workers; but the fair = | is also a place of entertainment, and from tonight until May | f 23 it will provide Christchurch with a festival spirit, | = bright lights and entertainment. f
