R.N.Z.N.V.R. UNITS

More May Be Formed In Five Years

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 6. The establishment of units of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve at New Plymouth, Timaru and Napier in about five years was foreshadowed in New Plymouth today by the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly).

Mr Connolly said he had already discussed this with the Navy Board and it was agreed that while there would be sufficient young men at the three ports to offer their services for the new units, the Navy was at present securing sufficient recruits from the divisions now operating in Auckland, . Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

"Our greatest need at present is for specialist staff for H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel,” said the Minister. “I think that eventually we will have to form the three suggested sub-divisions of the R.N.Z.N.V.R., each with about 60 men, but I do not think that will be possible inside five years,” Mr Connolly added.
