Warrnambool Cup Prospects
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 6. The New Zealand gelding. Calcutta Sweep, is expected to make a good showing in the Warrnambool Cup, to be run in the south-west Victorian centre of Warrnambool tomorrow.
Calcutta Sweep, ridden by E. Sellers, and carrying 8-0, should give the favourites. Saranover and Dongarra, a tough race. When he ran second in the mile Tozer Welter yesterday—and very nearly landed a huge betting coup— Calcutta Sweep showed that the extra 11 furlongs of the cup would suit him.
Forde!!, which won the Tozer Welter. and Spotted Nose, which was third, also have strong chances. On the same programme tomorrow is Australia’s richest provincial race, the Grand Annual Steenles, of £1450. with £62 12s in trophies. The race, which is about three miles, is also the longest advertised race in the Australian calendar. ASHBURTON TROTTING CLUB. N.Z. SAPLING STAKES, 1959. FINAL Forfeits for the N.Z.
