CITY HOUSING PROBLEMS
Conference Next Month
June 10 has been fixed as the date for a conference the Christchurch City Council is calling to discuss decayed housing in the citv and its replacement.
“While the word ‘slum’ is one we naturally avoid, it Is a fact that it is properly applicable to some portions of our city.” says the notice of meeting sent out by the council’s housing committee. The committee mentions that the council has taken the preliminary stens of eliminating the areas by buying and subdividing land for sale for citizens’ housing construction, by the building of oensionors’ cottages, and by the issue of repair or demolition notices on individual substandard houses.
Tn throe years. 78 dilapidated houses were demolished and another 31 were awaiting demolition. The of land involved was more than 20 acres. Since those figures were perpared, action had been taken in another 55 cases. •
To get a wide expression of opinion, the housing committee has invited to the conference many organisations interested in housing and housing redevelopment. both from a practical and a social angle.
