Soccer COSTA RICAN MATCH

Committee Supports

President

The president of the Canterbury Football Association (Mr J. Smith), at a meeting of the management committee last evening, received the endorsement of the committee for his statements on the use of Lancaster Park for the Costa Rican match. The meeting then went into committee and discussed the situation at length. A letter was received from the Christchurch Auto Sports Association concerning the construction of a stadium of international standard in Christchurch for the benefit of all sports. The committee appointed the secretarv-treasurer. Mr E. H. Williams, as its delegate to the association.

It was decided to apply to the Christchurch City Council for the use of English Park to play a charitv match for the Combined Hospitals Chapels Appeal. Mr Smith said the association should give full support to such a good and worthy cause and that a match of a high standard should be arranged, with the possibility of star players from other centres being included. Mr Williams said that many persons were gaining admission to English Park without paying. Members of the committee must police the ground and demand entrance money from spectators who were known to have entered the ground without paying, said Mr Smith.

Mr W. Carruthers mentioned that as a member of the police force was always in Attendance, offenders should be reported to him if they persisted in not paying. Mr R. van der Monder reported that five members of the Nomads Club had lost their players’ passes. The committee decided to write to the club requesting payment of the admission fee of 2s 6d for each player if the passes were not forthcoming. It was agreed that replacement passes would be issued in such cases at a charge of 5s each. Mr R. Storer, selector of the Canterbury under 18 team, was granted permission to play a trial match at Burwood Park on Sunday, if the City Council agreed. Mr Carruthers reported that R. Durant had withdrawn from the Canterbury training squad, as he would not be available for representative fixtures this season.

W. Hume To Play In Sydney

(Neto Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, May 5.

The Waikato and New Zealand Soccer centre-forward. W. Hume, has accepted an offer from the Sydney Gladesville-Ryde Club to turn semi-professional. Hume and his wife will leave for Australia on May 14.

It is understood that Hume has received several offers since he refused one from the Hakoah Club, Sydney, about two months ago. At the time Hume was unwilling to sign on for the two or three sea-

sons for which Hakoah wanted to contract him. His latest offer is for one season and the terms are believed to include a substantial signing on fee, his and his wife’s air fare, a job and accommodation. He will play with the former New Zealand soccer and cricket representative, K. Hough.
