EDUCATION BOARD FINANCES
Rise In Administrative Costs (Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 5. Administrative costs of new services, such as free textbooks, P.A.Y.E., and more frequent paydays for teachers, were falling heavily on the Auckland Education Board, the treasurer (Mr R. H. Barker) said in his annual report presented to the board today. The cost of distributing free textbooks in the initial year is shown as £13.852.
The board paid £384,200 to the Inland Revenue Department as deductions from salaries, wages and withholding payments. “We are expected to absorb administrative costs of so many new services, but our appeals for extra finance are either declined or deferred,’’ Mr Barker said. “It is evident that our grant for general administration is far too low and an increase is necessary and urgent,” he added.
