Montrose Form Runner In Ashburton Hurdles

•Th« Press’ Special Service

DUNEDIN, May 5

Montrose and Tut Tut are two Wingatui-trained jumpers which are form runners for the Ashburton County Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. Neither horse was given a serious task this morning but each schooled exceptionally well earlier in the week. Montrose is a last-start winner of the Peerswick Hurdles at Riccarton at Easter and providing the track conditions are suitable he should go close to taking the honours in the Winchester Hack Hurdles.

Tut Tut, winner of the Gardiner Memorial Steeples at the Birchwood meeting and runner-up to Delarmo in the Riverton Steeplechase at his last appearance, has done well since he last raced and he should have little trouble in mastering the Ashburton country. Both horses will be ridden by the stable horseman, Brian Blair.

A sound trial by Smart and Black Star and a bright half-mile by Ben Ledi and Subside were features of the track work this morning. The fast work was held on the extreme outside of the course proper on a heavy track. A cold wind and showers made conditions unpleasant. Smart Runs Solidly

Smart «B. P. Kennedy ) ran out the six furlongs solidly to beat Black Star <R. J. Skelton) by a length and a half with King Cassock (J. R. Dowling) a distant third in Imin 22 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 56 4-ssec.

One of the top weights for the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill. Smart appears to be in splendid order to make a fresh start.

Black Star, a dual winner over a mile at the Riverton Easter carnival, will race over the same distance in the Ashburton County Handicap on Saturday.

Panel <B. P. Kennedy), Pot Luck <H. T. Anderton) and Paper Clip <B. J. Anderton) finished clear of Cocos (P. Denton) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 26 2-ssec. They were doing their best work over the concluding stages to come home the last three furlongs in 42sec. Promise <R. J. Skelton) took 27 sec for the first two furlongs and completed five furlongs in Imin 9sec. The Golden Souvenir gelding will be ridden by J. D. PankInirst in the President’s Handicap at Invercargill. The best halfmile of the morning was credited to the Southland President’s Handicap candidates. Ben Ledi <B. J. Anderton) and Subside (R. J. Skelton), who finished on to shade their stable-mate Ravelston <H. T. Anderton), in 53 3-ssec. the opening furlong in 12 4-ssec.

Mitre Peak

Mitre Peak (H. T. Anderton), Ken (B. J. Anderton) and Maybeso <R. J. Skelton) ran the first furlong in 13 2-ssqc and completed half a mile in 55 4-ssec.

Momona (B. J. Anderton), Bobwood (R. J. Skelton) and Meri-

dian <B. P. Kennedy) were given, an easy run in 58sec, the opening] furlong in 14 2-ssec. Mary Brown <R. Pledger) and Strategy (J. R. Dowling), the only I two members of D. P. Wilson’s team in work at present, showed up over the same ground in 54 2-ssec. the opening furlong in 13sec.

Mary Brown, which ran a sound race for fourth place in the Trial Handicap on the first day of the Riverton fixture, is due to have her next race in the Trial Stakes at Invercargill on Saturday. A three-year-old chestnut gelding by War Game, Strategy has yet to ftice the starter.

Bonniboy (J. Wells) and Well Now <G. W. Foster) ran the first furlong in 14 2-ssec and were not ridden out to register 57 2-ssec. Greencille (J. R. Dowling), Reshine 'E. E. O'Brien) and Mary Ann <R. Crowe) completed their work by coming home the last three furlongs in 41sec. Le Roi <G. W. Foster) ran three furlongs down the back in 42sec and was then eased up.
