Basketball TOURNEY DATES CHANGED

Handicap Matches Next Saturday

The postponement of the handicap basketball tournament last Saturday has caused a rearrangement of the Canterbury Basketball Association’s programme. These changes were discussed by the executive at its meeting last evening. It was decided to retain tournaments at the beginning of the season, and the handicap tournament will be played next Saturday. The annual tournament will be held on May 2 - . , , . Competition games will begin on May 9. The executive reaffirmed its decision that teams failing to notify the secretary of their intention to default in a tournament would be fined 10s.

An inquiry from the Kakatai Club about replacement of players in a tournament was discussed at length. Miss Helen Yates favoured replacements, particularly in the lower grades. There, she said, the real strength of basketball lay. It was bad for young players who were not up to the standard of the rest of the team to sit on the side-line all day. Although other speakers favoured replacements for fifth and sixth grades, all felt that the introduction of replacements for tournaments could easily be abused, particularly in file higher grades. It was decided that no replacements would be permitted in tournaments. Mrs A. South asked that consideration be given to the grading of teams, which she considered was “fairly haphazard” at present. “One grading match on opening day is not a sufficient guide to a team's form,” she said. It was decided to make the annual tournament next year an additional guide for grading purposes. A team losing on grading day would be placed in a lower grade for the tournament. Should it win its grade in the tournament consideration could then be given to its reinstatement in the grade of its choice. The sub-associations’ tournament will be held in Christchurch on June 13. and sub-associations will hold their meeting of delegates the tame day.
