Approval For Burnside
The Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) has authorised acceptance of a tender for the Burnside High School, according to advice received by the Christchurch Post-primary Schools’ Council. His telegram mentions a school of 17 classrooms, but does not specify whether an assembly hall is included in the contract. Announcing this last evening, the chairman of the council (Mr W. J. Cartwright) said the news would greatly relieve his members who, only last Tuesday, had expressed doubts whether the Burnside High School could be built in time to open as planned—and as needed—in February of next year. That meeting had decided to protest at the delay and to inform the Education Department that the council would advertise for a headmaster for Burnside in the expectation of its opening on time. Mr Cartwright said that if the successful tenderer could start work immediately he had high hopes of the school being ready in time.
