Unusual Anchors For N.I. Bridge

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, March 4. A big bridge in Shoal Bay, midway between Northcote and Takapuna, Auckland, which -will link the Takapuna approach roads to the motorway, has most unusual anchors. They consist of bunches of steel rods sheathed in plastic. The rods are tied to the middle of the bridge underneath the carriageway and run from there underground at both ends for about 50 yards to large concrete blocks sunk deep under the road. Manholes coyer the anchor pits. Concrete will be pumped through the plastic tubes containing the steel rods. The anchors will hold the bridge fast in an earthquake or a tidal wave. The bridge is built on reclaimed land.
