Increase Grows Less (Rec. 11.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 18. The population of the United States increased again last year, but at the lowest rate in 12 years.The number of births declined for the first time since 1950 The Census Bureau estimated, that the population rose by 2.864.000 last year and totalled 175.602,000 at the start of 1959. This was a gain of 1.66 per cent.—the lowest growth rate since 1946, when the figure was 1.52 per cent. The growth rate has been slipping steadily since 1956, when it was 1.79 per cent. Births in 1958 numbered 4,249,000, down about 50,000 from a year earlier and the first decline in eight years. The birth rate of 24.4 for each 1000 population was the lowest qince 1950.
