Retiring U.S. Officer
A United States officer, who has spent the last two years in Christchurch with the United States Antarctic expedition, will live in Christchurch when he retires from the Navy on July 1, 1959 or 1960.
Single and “free as the breeze,” 34-y ear-old Lieutenant Clyde V. Reese, the expedition’s communications officer, has all his plans completed for civilian life. “I have a partnership in a city business and I intend to buy a section and build a house,” he said. Discussing his reasons for settling in New Zealand, Lieutenant Reese said: “The climate is good, the people very friendly and
I think that in business in New Zealand you can get a better return for your effort.” After 15 years in the United States Navy, with wide experience as an engineer, navigation, gunnery and communications officer, Lieutenant Reese will be moving into a new field for his business career commercial catering. He is in partnership with a New Zealander and they are tendering for the contract for the restaurant at the new Christchurch airport terminal building. Graduating from the Merchant Marine Academy in the United States, Lieutenant Reese did “postgraduate work in international law before joining the navy. During World War 11, he served in the Atlantic and the Pacific, and served in the U.S.S. Sicily during the Korean War.
Memories of service in the Korean War were revived yesterday when Rear-Admiral George J. Dufek, the Antarctic expedition’s commander, presented Lieutenant Reese with a Navy Unit Commendation ribbon, which was awarded to officers and men of the Sicily for “outstanding heroism in action during the Korean War.” ,
