NEW SHELTER ON RUAPEHU

Lodge To Accommodate 62 Persons “The fnu" Special Service NEW PLYMOUTH, February 18. A new £4500 overnight shelter on Mount Ruapehu, which was opened recently, has been named Whakapapa Lodge. The lodge; which will sleep 62, has been named after the Whakapapa Hut, one of the first buildings on the mountain, which was dismantled recently. Mr T. Shout opened the lodge on behalf of the Tongariro National Park Board. He is retiring this year after 15 years on the board and 40 years associated with Ruapehu. The board decided to enlarge

and extend the Whakapapa motor camp, which is about a quarter of a mile from the Chateau. The camp has been heavily patronised during the summer. It is planned to double the number of caravan bays and to form a grass area for tents.
