WEST COAST BOWLS TOURNEY

One Rink Qualifies For - Post-Section

The Carlton (Auckland) rink, skipped by one of New Zealand’s best known class oowlers. W, P O’Neill. Is the first to qualify for post-section play in the West Coast Bowling Centre’s annual open fours tourney, now being conducted on four greens at Greymouth.

At the end of play yesterday. O'Neill’s rink was the only one to emerge with six wins to its credit—a fine achievement, which won the acclaim of local and visiting bowls enthusiasts alike.

At least 17 rinks with less than three wins have no chance of qualifying for post-section play, since six wins are required. However, interest in the tournament is - quickening as the likely final candidates begin to emerge.

Rinks skipped by T. Boyd (Blackball), E. R. Moss (Nelson). R. McDonald (Greyxnouth). L. c. Lindley (Greymouth)., and E. Pascoe (Blackball) all hav? five wins, and any one of them could be the winner. Yesterday’s session was marred by the death of Mr. Charlton Sara, a member of T. McKenzie’s (Westport) rink. McKenzie and his other two players have withdrawn from the contest.

Surprise of Day _ The surprise in yesterday’s session W. P. O'Neill’s magnificent showing was generally expected—was the shock defeat, of L. C. Lindley’s (Greymouthrrtnk, 19-16, by F. Sadler’s (Karroo) rink. During this game Lindley had got. a seven on Sadler, but to no avail. Sadler’s win was meritorious, particularly since he is carrying two first-year players in his rink. Although Sadler’s rink has only two wins so far, O’Neill’s strong Carlton rink had a struggle to beat him, 20-17, in round six. The battle will be on today, as players with a bare three wins struggle to qualify for post-section play, which begins tomorrow.
