GRAF SPEE AS SHIP’S NAME
River Plate Veterans Protest
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 17.
The River Plate Veterans’ Association has protested to the German Legation in Wellington against a proposal to rename a former British frigate, now operating with the West German Navy, the Graf Spee. The protest has been lodged on the ground that members of the association contributed to the defeat of the former Graf Spee, and that the step to perpetuate' the name on a former British vessel is felt to be in bad taste.
In a letter to the West German Ambassador, to New Zealand (Dr. Herbert Noehring), Mr J. O. Thomson, secretary of the association, says: "While acknowledge ing the bravery of your countrymen and the ethical manner In which the action was fought, it Is nevertheless requested that this objection be recorded and forwarded to the West German authorities concerned.”
