Athletics TEAM FOR 1960 OLYMPICS
Selectors Unchanged From' Last Year (New Zealand ‘Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. The New Zealand team for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome will be selected by the 'same panel which chose the team for the 1958 Empire Games at Cardiff.
The panel is Messrs E. C. Guy (chairman). C. L. S. Cross, and P. N. Robinson. They were elected at r meeting of the New Zealand. Olympic and British Empire Games Association In Wellington this evening. “I am sure the panel will do a good job, as they did in 1958,” said the chairman (Mr H. I. Austad).
Financial Position Improved
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. The New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association was financially better off because of the 1958 Empire Games in Cardiff, the chairman (Mr H. I. Austad) told the association’s meeting in Wellington this evening. During a discussion on the balancesheet covering the New Zealand team for the Games, it was announced that the organising committee had increased its original grant of £lOOO to £4290, and this left the association with a surplus of £1875.
Senior Team For National Titles
The following have been chosen to represent Canterbury at the national senior athletic championships at Palmerston North on March 6 and 7:—
100 and 220 yards, L. Jones, 1. Hamilton, R. Burgess; 440 yards, P. Morrissey, B. Kerr; 880 yards, G. Hack; mile, G. Smith and D. Dixey; three miles, K. Williams, Smith: six miles, C. Reece, D. Greig; marathon, R. Stevens W. Richards, G. Wilson, B. Curie; 220 yards hurdles, P. Cates; 440 yards hurdles, P. Cates, G. Wade; steeplechase, K. Williams. J. D. Macdonald; high jump, M. Smith, A. Harbott; pole vault, R. Pfeftniger; long jump, G. Kitchen: shot, discut, and javelin, R. Ball; 20 and 50 kilometre walks, H. Wheeler; 4 x .110 yards relay, L. Jones, A. Hamilton, R. Burgess, and B. Kerr (P. Morrissey reserve): 4 x 440 yards relay, Morrissey, Kerr, Hamilton, and Wade (Hack reserve).
