Sportsman’s Notebook NEW TABLE TENNIS CLUB FOR NORTH BRIGHTON

Because of the keeii interest of local players and enthusiasts, the North Brighton Table Tennis Club has been formed. A meeting was called last week in the North Brighton Memorial Hall and Mr R. Forscut elected chairman and Mr J. Evans secretary. Mr Forscut said that a club had been needed in the district, as could be seen from the big list of members and the good attendance.

Mr P. Williamson, representing the Canterbury Table Tennis Association, said the club should affiliate with the association and enter teams in the inter-club competition. One table was used at the inaugural meeting, but there was room for four. Three more have been ordered.

Those elected to the committee were:—Messrs R. Sturrock and E. Woodward and Mesdames C. Lilleyman and N. J. Loveday. Messrs Forscut and Evans were elected club delegates to the association’s next annual meeting. ♦ ♦ JB Empire Gaines Film A 30-minute black and white film with the commentary by Chris Brasher on the sixth British and Commonwealth Games at Cardiff last July is about to be released through the United Kingdom Information Services overseas for showing in all parts of the world in cinemas, on television and by sports clubs and organisations. Although on the face of it an athletics film—and it shows something of every sport represented at the games—its purpose is to indicate the spirit that prevails in Commonwealth competition. The film also shows life in the games village, the ceremonial, and the visit by athletes to London. The Central Office of Information commissioned the film from a , leading documentary film company. « # * Sanders Cup Rules A recommendation to the New Zealand Yachting Federation that the Sanders Cup be open to challengers from ports and not, as at present, solely from yachting associations, has been made by the

cup conference. If the move is ratified, the Sanders Cup would be run on the same challenge system as the Cornwell Cup for Z-class boats.. The conference expressed satisfaction with the present X-class construction, and made no recommendation for either amateur or optional construction. * * *

Auckland Rugby Players

Four young Auckland Rugby players have been selected for the half-backs’ and first-five-eighths' coaching school to be held at Wellington from March 20 to 22. They are A. Clarke, W. A. Davies, A. Edgar and D. Meek. Clarke played at flrst-flve-eighths for New Zealand in the last test against Australia last season. Edgar and Davies were regular members of the Auckland team. Davies scored more than 100 points in his first senior season last year, and Meek was the Auckland colts’ half-back. * * * Professional Tennis Amateur tennis officials in Australia are investigating the possibility, of running, professional tournaments. The suggestion that they do so was made by the president of the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association (Mr A. Colvin). His suggestion is the latest and most unusual step taken by amateur officials in an effort to combat the American professional' tennis prompter. Jack Kramer. Mr Colvin said the association must move with the times and must seriously consider such a move. There were a lot of ifs and buts attached to the scheme, but he believed it could be worked. * » * , Indoor Bowling Canterbury, with 3019 registered indoor bowlers, is the fourth biggest centre in the Dominion. Waikato with 7055 players is first with Auckland, 6748, and Taranaki, 4634, second and third. The growth of this winter sport has been amazing. In 1949 there were only six clubs in Canterbury and this year the season will start with 93 clubs and 3000 members. In 1949 the number of registered players in New Zealand was 1854 but at the end of last season the total was 48,054. It is understood that the 1959 season will start with more than 50,000 players taking the mats. In the New Zealand championships last year 5500 matches had to be played before winners in the three sections were found and it is thought that the championships at Rotorua this year will break all records.
