Women’s Bowls WIND AFFECTS PLAY IN NATIONAL PAIRS
Conditions were far from good for the first three rounds of the New Zealand Women’s Bowling Association's pairs, which commenced on 10 Christchurch greens yesterday. When the first game Began, Vie greens were holding a little, but they became much faster, and with the gusty wind, which continued throughout the day, accurate drawing was extremely difficult. At the end of the day only 19 of the 158 pairs entered had won three games. Fifty-two pairs have won two games and require two wins today to qualify for post-section play ‘ Major Upset
The major upset of the day was the defeat of the present pairs champions, Mesdames Winstantley and Nicol (Marewa) by Mesdames Pitcaithly and James (United). In this game, the United pair completely outclassed the Marewa pair. United led 6-2 on the sixth head, and then the scoring was fairly even to be 11-U on the twelfth. United went away to lead 15-12 on the sixteenth head, and from the twentieth, which was the last played, Marewa failed to score, United winning 23-12. In her next game, Mrs James did not produce the same form, and was beaten 23-10 by Mrs Kay (Shirley). Mrs Cayzer (Mornington), runnerup in the fours, had a comfortable win in her first game, but in the second only managed to win by one
point against Mrs Roulston (Awamoa). In her last game she was soundly beaten by Mrs Gunion (Hampden), 24-8. Mrs Butterworth (Tepapa), after losing to Mrs Deavoll (Belfast) 1911 in the first round, had very comfortable wins in her next two. After big wins in her first two gazfies, Mrs Pirrie (Dallington) lost heavily in her next to Mrs O’Brien (Waverley), who has now won two games. She lost the first 16 to 18 to Mrs Hamblyn (Riverside), the singles champion. Sudden Change A game with changing fortunes was that between Mrs Stanton (Woolston) and Mrs Lunken (Riverside). Mrs Lunken scored on the first six heads to lead 12-0, but the Woolston pair scored a single, five and six on the next three heads to bring the score level on the ninth head. The sudden burst by Woolston seemed to demoralise the Riverside pair, for Woolston went to a lead of 21-12 on the fifteenth head, and won the game 29-16. Mrs Stanton, in the last game of the day, met Mrs Nicol, and was beaten 20-12. One of the heaviest scoring games was between Mrs Whale (Mornington) and Mrs Campbell (Dallington). Only three singles were scored, the other scores being five twos, eight threes, four fours and one six. Mrs Campbell won 31-28.
