SWIMMING Dann And Hodge Retain Their Intermediate Titles

(New Zeatana Press Association)

PALMERTON N., February 15. The equalling of R. Geddes’ 100yds intermediate boys’ breaststroke record by G. Wakeley (Auckland) and the record-breaking swim by another Auckland representative, B. Robertson, in the intermediate boys* 220yds backstroke were the highlights of the fourth and final day of the junior and intermediate New Zealand swimming championships at Palmerston North yesterday t Geddes’ record, which has stood since 1933 and is the oldest record in New Zealand swimming, was equalled by Wakeley in the third heat of the event when he returned Imin 13.6 sec. Unfortunately, Wakeley could not produce his excellent times in the final and finished second behind C. Little (Southland), who clocked Imin 14.4 sec in the race. Robertson gained further distinction when he set a new time for the intermediate boys’ 220yds backstroke in the first heat of the event and lowered the second further in the final. Robertson held the record and title from last year’s championship and his new time of 2min 32.55ec was 2.ssec lower than previously. Miss M. O’Neill, of Wellington, gained .the intermediate girls’ 220yds breaststroke title with comparative ease from Miss S.

Beauchamp (Auckland). Miss O’Neill won by 6.3 sec. The 100yds intermediate boys' freestyle championship was retained by G. Dann (Canterbury) when he narrowly defeated L. Olds (Otago). Olds beat Dann in the heats by O.lsec, but the titleholder proved too strong in the final and after racing level with Olds for most of the distance pulled away at the finish and won in 55.65ec. The diving events were once again marred by gusty winds, worse than on Friday. R. L. Hodge once again took the intermediate boy§’ title with form that none of the remaining competitors could match.
