ITALIAN PREMIER
Fanfani As “Caretaker”
fNZ Press A ssoctatton—Copyright i (Rec. 11 p.m.) ROME, January 27.
President Giovanni Gronchi, of Italy, will begin consultations to find a new Prime Minister today following the resignation of Mr Amintore Fanfani’s coalition Government yesterday. Mr Fanfani has been asked by the President to remain as a “caretaker” Prime Minister in the meantime.
Political quarters last night forecast a short-term minority Cabinet composed entirely of Christian Democrats but a long-drawn-out crisis is likely before this is achieved.
The Government’s collapse resulted from the resignation of the Social Democrat Labour Minister 'Ezio Vigorelli), after his disagreement with his party leader
over the' attitude to be adopted by the Social Democrat Party towards the Nenni Socialists. The Nenni Socialists declared their independence from the Communists last week, and Mr Vigorelli is believed to favour reunion of the Social Democrats with th,e Nenni Socialists. Mr Fanfani’s shaky parliamentary majority was dependent on the votes of the Leftwing Social Democrats.
