TRADE WITH ISRAEL

N.Z. Beef To Be Bought (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 27. Israel and New Zealand have agreed to extend to each other most-favoured-nation treatment during 1959, and Israel intends to buy at least 1000 tons of the Dominion’s beef this year. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) announced this today. Mr Holloway expressed the hope that there would be increased trade between the two countries. The Minister said that these developments were the outcome of a recent exchange of letters between the Israeli Minister for Australia and New Zealand (Mr Moshe Yuval) and the Minister of External Affairs (Mr Nash). The letters had explored the possibility of developing trade.

New Zealand-Israeli trade began last year with a shipment of kosher-killed New Zealand beef, said Mr Holloway. Israeli reports . about the beef had been very favourable. In spite of shipping difficulties it was hoped this trade might now be on a more permanent basis. “The latest trade arrangements,” said Mr Holloway, “are in keeping with the development of new markets for New Zealand produce, and we welcome this opportunity of fostering closer trade relationships with Israel.”
