EXHIBITION OF N.Z. ART
Minister Denies Miss Marsh’s Statement (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 27. Since 1952 there had not been any invitation from the Tate Art Gallery in London to send a collection of New Zealand works for display in the gallery, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Anderton) said today. He was replying to Miss Ngaio Marsh, who said in Christchurch on Saturday that a recent invitation to exhibit New Zealand works at the gallery had been declined by the Department of Internal Affairs. She said the invitation had been received about the same time as the Department of External Affairs had agreed to send a New Zealand art collection for exhibition in Russia. This was towards the end of last year. “I do not know what basis Miss Marsh has for this statement,’’ said Mr Anderton. “There has been no recent invitation to exhibit in the Tate Gallery.” The Minister said there had been an invitation in 1952 through the High Commissioner in London (Sir Frederick Doidge). “It was declined by the then Government, and has not been renewed since,” said Mr Anderton.
