FIRE IN SHIP AT WELLINGTON

No Structural Damage Reported

(New Zealand Press Association) WELINGTON, January 27.

Foremen wore breathing apparatus to combat a fire early this morning ip a storage locker on the'after deck of the motor-vessel Waiwera at No. 2 berth, Glasgow Wharf.

Five appliances answered an alarm at 3.44 a.m. Difficulty was experienced in getting to the seat of the fire,-two decks down. Wind sails had lo be rigged to guide air to the bottom of the hold to clear the smoke.

For the first two hours firemen used breathing apparatus and the fire was brought under control with high-pressure fog, but it was not until 7 a.m. that the ship’s crew were able to start unloading the burned canvas and cordage from the store. No structural damage to the ship was reported, and the cause of the fire is not known.
