Timber Tossed Into The Air (New Zealand Press Association) HOKITIKA, January 27. Timber was toosed 100 feet into the air when a whirlwind hit the yards at the Mananui Sawmill, about five miles south of Hokitika, at 10.45 a.m. today. Four men were loading timber when they saw the whirlwind approaching from the north-west “Scrub and birds were being sucked straight-up,” said one of
the men, Mr J. Hoffmann. , “There was nowhere to take cover, so all we could do was dodge the timber as It came down,” he said. The veranda of the millhouse was tom off and tossed on to the roof but no other damage has been reported. RE
