LAWN TENNIS SEVERAL UPSETS IN PLAY AT N.Z. JUNIOR TOURNEY

(Nfw Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. Miss G. Landells (Waikato) is the player of the moment at the New Zealand junior tennis championships being held at Central Park. Wellington. Miss Landells. unknown out of her own district until this tournament, eliminated the top seed. Miss Betty. Bryant (Auckland) from the under 19 girls’ sing! es in straight sets in a quarter-final today. Miss Bryant was far from her best form, but Miss Landell’s win was most impressive. She could well take the title. This was one of a number of upsets today. Hawkes (Wellington) eliminated the second seed, G. Davidson (North Otago), in the under 19 boys’ singles, and other seeded players were beaten in quarter-final surprises. This has not been a good tournament for Miss Bryant. Today her lack of confidence against Miss Landells was most noticeable. Miss Landells plays an intelligent game, and can produce a winning shot when the opportunity presents itself. She appears the find of the championships. Hawkes has been in excellent form in recent weeks. He trailed Davidson in both sets of their match, but came through when he put on the pace and pressure. One of today’s best efforts was that of Miss E. Cavaye (Hutt Valley) against the first seed in the under 17 girls’ singles, Miss P. Belton (Auckland). Miss Cavaye, probably the youngest player competing, won the first set and played splendidly throughout. She has three more years in this section. R. Purser (Taranaki), unseeded in the under 17 events, has played with determination to enter the semi-finals of the singles and the doubles. In both he has beaten seeded players.
