Escape From Cells At Greymouth
(From Our Own Reportar) GREYMYOUTH, Jan. 22. A prisoner who was sentenced at Greymouth on Wednesday to three years in a Borstal institution for shopbreaking and theft escaped from the Greymouth Police Station cells between 7.30 a-m. and 8.30 a.m. today. He is John David Buckeridge. aged 20, a brewery hand, who had been released from a two-year term in Borstal only four months ago. Police later received information that he had been seen walking along the railway line in the direction of Karoro about 7.35 a.m. ’' - .» • :"r' ■' Buckeridge is sft s)in in height, is of slim build, and has a very dark complexion, with long hair
and sideboards. He left his coat behind him at the police station, and was wearing black stovepipe trousers, a white gym shirt, and black crepe' sole shoes. He has tattoo marks on both arms. Buckeridge was to have been taken by rail later this morning to Invercargill. He was noticed absent at 8.30 a.m- after having been released from his cell into the cell block for breakfast an hour earlier. The cell block is barred from the remainder of the police station. Buckeridge escaped by removing louvres from the window in the lavatory in the cell bldck. The window gives access to the station yard, from which there are two exits, one to Guinness street, and the other to Tarapuhi street It was found that Buckeridge had not touched his breakfast. The Kumara, Otira, Reefton, Westport, and Hokitika police stations were alerted, and a description of Buckeridge broadcast. The Greymouth police maintained a watch on the road outlets from the town. Buckeridge is not regarded by the police as dangerous.
