Memorial Avenue

Sir,—l see the local bodies are to decide on the final form of the memorial to be erected in Memorial avenue. May I respectfully suggest that they pass over the right of judgment of this essentially aesthetic matter to the group best qualified to judge—the architects and designers of the community. In friendly spirit it must be realised that local body representatives are no more fit to judge a matter of aesthetics than are they competent to sit in judgment on a demonstration of neuro-surgery, Both jobs are for qualified experts, not laymen. A competition (with say a prize of £100), the results of which are judged by a competent panel, will produce the best results. Let us hope that this ‘Jack is as good as his master’ nonsense will yield to crisp,, logical thinking at the council tables.—Yours, etc., PER ARDUA. January 21, 1959.
