ADDINGTON MARKET Big Lamb Yarding At First Special Sale

There was a yarding of 32,247 sheep for the first of the specif store sheep sales held at Addington market yesterday. Lambs easily predominated in this selection. While quality was generally not so good as last week the level of prices was close to those ruling at the last sale, in spite of the size of the offering, and there was a firming note as the sale progressed. For two-tooth ewes, however, the sale was slacker with the best of a fairly small offering back by 5s and other classes easier by possibly a bigger margin.

In the old ewe section the best serviceable sheep were in demand at about late rates but medium ewes tended to be’easier, and aged and indifferent sorts were hard to sell. Prices for this class ranged down to only a shilling or two. The entry totalled 32,247 head compared with 20,253 last week. It included 24,533 lambs, 1997 twotooth ewes, 4822 older ewes and 895 wethers.

STORE LAMBS Values over all for store lambs showed little change from last week, although the market at times moved erratically. After opening on a fairly weak note, partly due to the more varied assortment in the first race, values firmed somewhat to about par and, as the sale progressed, appreciated further. The quality of the offering was more varied than last week when a fairly even standard prevailed and there were more lighter and plain sorts yarded. In addition, the prices for the best lambs were accentuated by several lines of exceptional qualify which sold accordingly. The entry was greatly increased. 24,533 coming forward, compared with 16,950 last week, and the sale I was followed throughout by a very • large and active gallery of buyers, i Practically every lot found a buyer, and there was fairly keen competition for all except the very plain i lines. Much of the entry came from the back country and was of a better ! quality than had been expected, many of the lambs showing a good ; bloom Ewe lambs came forward in • increased numbers and these met a ready demand. Southdown cross lambs were at a premium and sales were made in the face of keen competition. Over all the sale had a good sound tone and in spite of the increased numbers there was no question of an oversupply. The pick of the Down cross lambs made up to 51s, Romney and Romney cross wether lambs to 38s 6a and fine wools to 46s 6d. The top class of wether lambs made from 35s to 51s, good at 29s 6d to 345, average at 19s to 28s and others from 7s 6d to 17s. Halfbred ewe lambs sold up to 35s and Romney and Romney cross to 345. The best of the ewe lambs made from 31s to 355, good at 28s to 30s, average at 14s to 255, and plain from 5s to Ils 6d. I A feature of the sale was the annual entry of Southdown-Romney i cross lambs from the estate of R. O. Bradley (Charteris Bay), which I met with the usual keen competition. In spite of the drought conditions prevailing on Banks Peninsula the lambs were up to their usual standard. Of the total entry of 1508 the first cut of 103 realised 51s. the top price of the day; the second cut of 584 brought 44s for 73, 43s for 219, and 42s fidl for 292, the third cut of 616 fetched 3as in three lots; and the fourth cut of 205 sold at 325. TWO-TOOTH EWES The sale of two-tooth ewes (up till last week classified as ewe hoggets) was not a very happy one. It began on a weak note before a small gallery with two passings, and it settled down with rates for the best back by about 5s and for medium sorts the decline was even more marked. The offering was of only moderate size and was of mixed quality, but with some useful pens of both fine wool and Romney sheep included. Fine wool sheep predominated in the selection and for the best of these values ranged from 50s to 60s, with average at 41s 6d to 48s, and plain at 31s to 395. In the Romney ewe category the pick of the selection realised from 52s 6d to 60s, with average to 47s 6d and others down to 345. . . The fine wool section of the sale was headed by R. I. and A. J, Black (Balmoral) with 65 Corriedale at 60s, and next in order was a line of 73 Corriedales from J. K. Fincnam (Hawarden), which made 55s The leading Romney sales were made on account of two unnamed vendors. One sold 67 at 60s and another 70 Romney cross at the same price. Another 44 Romneys from the estate W. Smith (Springfield) were knocked down at 54s 6d. Sales included:— - ‘ National Mortgage and Agency and H. Matson and Company sold: on account of B. G. T. Quaife (Waiau), 66 ewes at 35s to 375; T. W. Bamford (Hurunui), 35 ewes at 355; client. 76 Romney cross ewes at 60s; Dalgety and Company, Ltd., sold: on account of R. J. S. Hoban (Culverden), 105 Corriedale at 35s to 455. OLDER EWES There was a much bigger selection of older ewes and once again it included a fair number of pens of aged sheep with little to commend them. Buyers proved selective. For the useful sort of ewe able to do at least another lamb there was an inquiry at a price which was about recent levels. The medium class of ewe was possibly a little slacker—it might have been easier by 2s and 3s—while the aged and indifferent sheep was very hard to quit. An odd pen of this latter class of thin old ewes brought only about 2s 6d and in one case there was no buyer for a pen offered at only Is. Similarly there was no buyer ior old ewes offered at 2s and 2s 6d. The outlook for this class of ewe looks far from bright. There were a few passings m the section, but on the whole there was a fairly good clearance. The best of the Romney and Romney cross ewes ranged from 40s to 425, with good at 36s to 38s and others at 12s to 30s 6d. Fine wool ewes commanded from 34s to 36s od for the better class, with average at 28s to 33s and plain at 14s to 275. with culls at Is Top price of the section was 42s paid for a line of four, six and eight-tooth Romneys from the Aitken Little Pigeon Bay Estate (Pigeon Bay). J. P. Rivers (Mayfair) sold 97 young ewes at 41s and the tops of a line of 210. annual draft Romney Corriedales from J. F. Cracrort Wilson (Cashmere) realised For 134 five-year-old Corriedales C. H.
