STRIKE ORDERED BY UNION
Directive To Workers In Dairy Factories (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 1. The Dairy Factory Workers’ Union has ordered its 4000 members to stop work from midnight on Tuesday. The directive was issued yesterday by the national secretary, Mr S. Wheatley, of Auckland. Mr Wheatley said: “At the compulsory conference called by the Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) in Wellington on Tuesday, the employers were not prepared to make any offer to increase the basic rate of £9 15s 4d a week in the dairy industry.” The proposed strike will affect all of New Zealand’s 328 dairy factories. The previous decision to strike, which was withdrawn when Mr Hackett called the compulsory conference of employees and employers, was supported by the Auckland, Taranaki, and Southland unions, but was opposed by Wellington. The Wellington union, according to Mr Wheatley, now supports the decision to strike. Mr Hackett has said that a strike would cause a loss of £300,000 a day. The factories involved process about 64,000,0001 b of butterfat a month at this time of the year.
