5 MORE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS
New Commonwealth
Countries
The Rhodes Trustees have decided to establish Rhodes Scholarships for five Commonwealth countries or regions which have recently become or are about to become self-governing—Ceylon, Ghana, the Malayan region (which will include. besides Malaya. Singapore, Brunei North Borneo and Sarawak), Nigeria, and the Caribbean region including besides the Caribbean Federation, British Guiana. British Honduras, and the Bahamas but wil] exclude Jamaica since Jamaica already enjoys a Rhodes Scholarship of its own created by the founder’s will. Because of the exceptional pressure on Oxford University expected over the next few years it will not be practicable to bring al] the new scholarships into existence at the same time. The trustees accordingly propose to establish the scholarship for Ceylon first, the first Ceylonese scholar going into residence at Oxford next October, then in successive years the scholarship for Ghana and that for Malaya and thereafter those for Nigeria and the Caribbean.
Hitherto virtually all Rhodes Scholars have been from “old” Commonwealth countries; the only exceptions have been the Indian and Pakistan scholars (two scholarships were created for India at the end of the last war and after the partition of India one of these went to Pakistan).
