OUTLOOK FOR PEACE

WASHINGTON, Dec. 31

Mr Khrushchev, said today that prospects were good for preserving and strengthening peace in 1959.

He said there was no disputed or unsettled issue that could not be solved by peaceful means, provided all parties concerned genuinely wanted to do so.

Mr Khrushchev said it was his conviction that the prospects for preserving and strengthening peace were good because “the solution of this question depends on the desire of the peoples, and at the_ present time there is not a single people in the world that desires war.” “We in the Soviet Union believe that the American people, whose creative genius we value highly, and the Soviet people, who strive for peace and friendship among all countries, should and will play their outstanding part in strengthening peace.

"Nobody will deny that there is a particularly great responsibility for the destiny of peace resting on the shoulders of our peoples.” He said this was a "responsibility to decide whether fear of another war will continue to alarm mankind or whether mankind will breathe with relief, ridden of the threat of war.”

The Soviet people, he said, had a genuine desire to settle all issues peacefully. The Soviet people "from the bottom of our hearts wish the American people well-being and happiness, a life of peace and tranquillity for 1959.”
