CRICKET BOLTON 79, GUY 63 SAVE CANTERBURY

(From Our Own Reporter;

i DUNEDIN, December 25. Sensational bowling by Otago’s new “cap,” the medium-slow left-arm bowler, N. T. Woods whn brought about Canterbury’s collapse when the side seemed set for a big score, and a fine third-wicket partnership for 127 runs between B. A. Bolton and J W. Guy, were the mam features of the first day’s play in the Plunket Shield match at Carisbrook today.

Canterbury was all out for 209 runs, scored in a little more than four hours, Woods taking six wickets for 56 runs, off 25 overs, 12 of which were maidens.

Canterbury struck back in the remaining 17 minutes left before (tumps to dismiss S. G. McKnight md at stumps Otago had scored i runs and lost one wicket. Woods, who flighted the ball we il and kept an immaculate length, troubled all the batsmen rrith his late in-swingers. Winning the toss and batting on a plumb wicket, Canterbury lost two wickets in the first 45 minutes I for 23 runs, but then Bolton end Guy played confidently and at afternoon tea the score was 139 without further loss. At this stage, Woods had bowled 13 overs for 16 runs, taking the wicket of B. A. Haworth. After the tea break he broke clean through the Canterbury side. In his seventeenth over he had Guy caught after scoring 62 and three balls later, M. E. Chapple was brilliantly caught on the leg side by the wicket-keeper M. Edmunds before he had scored. G. T. Dowling, J. W. Kiddey and Bolton, in that order, were Woods’s next victims, and from 150 for two, Canterbury was struggling to get past the 200 mark. Cautious Start

The only Canterbury batsmen to impress were Bolton and Guy. After a cautious beginning, both waited for the ball to hit and then hit it hard.

Although he had a couple of ‘lives,’’ Guy seemed the more likely, to get among the runs. He was untroubled by J. C. Alabaster and A. M. Moir, both of ’ whom were able to get little ’ tom from the wicket. He reached his 50 in 106 minutes and was out tor 62 when the partnership ' had taken the total from 23 for two to 150 for three in 136 minutes. Bolton edged a few early in his innings but later played some ■ glorious square cuts and offirives. His 50 came up in 125 minutes and he was out for 79 • fter being at the wickets for wo hours and 40 minutes. Batsmen’s Wicket The Otago bowlers found the ticket gave them little joy. The ; pinners were innocuous, and the last-medium bowler F. J. Camet ran, who opened the attack with ' Woods, was able to extract little lift, although he bowled better tan his figures of one wicket for <3 would indicate. L A. Clark, the other bowler tried, was played fairly confi- ■ dently in his opening spell, but took two wickets towards the end ot the match and brilliantly ran R. C. Motz out before he had Beared. The Otago fielding was patchy t? to afternoon tea but showed . a marked improvement when Woods began his breakthrough. But too many chances were '• missed. Between them, Motz and Kid- ‘ dey bowled six overs before stamps were drawn for the day. Both had the batsmen completely on the defensive although Motz’s opening over saw J. R. Veitch Inot having to play a ball. In his second over, Motz struck a good blow by dismissing McKnight before he had scored. The weather was fine and warm

Fiji’s Teacher Shortage.—lt was estimated that there were some 16,000 children of school age who were not attending school at all, the Director of Education (Mr J. G. Rodger) reported to the Budget meeting of the Fiji Legislative Council recently. To make real progress, he said, in attempts to get these children into school, the Colony must double its output of trained teachers. In the next five-year plan—l96l-65—the emphasis would be on primary education. Whether the achievement in such short a span of years could be free compulsory education was a different matter.— Suva, December 22.
