DISTANCE RUNNERS

Second in the Canterbury marathan title and fourth in the New Zealand marathon title last season, Ron Stevens continues to improve over the shorter distances. Last Saturday he was far too strong over the latter stages -<for the rest of the field, when he ran his fastest two miles in open competition with a time of 9min 18.8 sec. His previous best official time was 9min 38sec two years ago, although earlier this season he was timed unofficially at 9min 33sec for the two miles in the course of a threemile race. At the New Brighton Club’s opening meeting at the start of the season he was timed at just inside 9min 20sec. Improvement among the distance runners is not limited to Stevens. J. D. Macdonald in second place ran 9min 25sec, 17sec better than his previous and C. E. Dillimore, with a time of 9min 27.25ec, improved by 13sec. In a recent race Dillimore improved his mile time by nearly six seconds, recording 4min 24.6 sec.
