HORTICULTURAL AWARDS
Christchurch Man Wins Gold Medal
The Cockayne gold medal for the candidate gaining the highest average marks in the diploma section of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticultures examinations for 1958 has been awarded by the examining board to Mr L. J. Metcalf, of Christchurch. Mr R. Boggust, of Palmerston North, gained the J. A. Campbell memorial prize for the most successful candidate in the intermediate section. The examinations were con-
ducted in horticulture, fruit and Vegetable culture, both written and practical, and attracted 48 candidates throughout New Zealand. Seventy-five per cent gained passes. Mr A. C Morgan, of Christchurch, Was awarded the David Tannock memorial prize for the highest marks in the oral and practical Stage 111 examination. The subjects in which passes were gained by local candidates are listed below, indicated by numbers as fol-lows:—Book-keeping (1), horticultural botany (2), plant protection, stage I (3> ’oral and practical, stage 1 (4), principles of botanical classification (5). horticulture, stage I (6). special subject (7), oral and practical stage II (81 horticulture, stage II (9), plant protection, stage II ( 10) oral ana practical, stage 111 (11) thesis (12) horticultural economics (13). fruit culture, stage II (14). business aspects of vegetable culture (15). the plant and plant breeding (16), vegetable production Christchurch.—Aitken, N.
