THEATRE SITE IN BRYNDWR
Parking Difficulty Foreseen
Possible parking difficulties are holding up the approval by the Waimairi County Council of the site plan for a proposed picture theatre to serve Eryndwr and Fendalton. As a result the council is to review its code of ordinances.
This was decided by the council at its meeting on Thursday. The site plan had been forwarded to the council town-planning committee by Mr M. F. Foate. In the town-planning committee report to the council. Cr. C. L. Austin was quoted as saying that there was no area immediately adjacent to the theatre for a car park as required by the code. Cr. Austin said a theatre was urgently needed in the district. Thousands of people were living within a radius of half a mile of the proposed theatre. ‘‘lt would be a wonderful service to the community,” he said. Cr. F. W. Walter said he thought the council’s code of ordinances was ‘‘a bit harsh.” The code could be broken in regard to parking. Cr. W. E. Cassidy said to demand a car park was “a waste of time and money.” One club had been forced to have a car park and when functions were held, cars were still parked at the roadside.
It seemed pointless to demand a car park if people could not be compelled to use it, he added. The council decided to have the town-planning committee review the council code of ordinance.
