DAVIS CUP TENNIS
U.S. Successful In Singles
(NZ Press Association —Copyright! (Rec. 11 p.m.) PERTH, Dec. 19.
The United States team took a firm hold on the second Davis Cup inter-zone final at Royal King’s Park today by winning the first two singles matches against Italy in decisive fashion. The Americans, on today’s performance, seem certain to meet Australia in the challenge round beginning at Brisbane on December 29. In the first match, after a close tussle for the first two sets, Nicola Pietrangeli failed suddenly against Alex Olmedo, who won 5-7, 10-8, 6-0, 6-1. But Ham Richardson won in straight sets against Orlando Sirola, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. Today’s singles players will combine tomorrow in the doubles --although the players could be changed before the match—and if the United States wins the doubles it will have clinched the series.
