Around The Greens

Fendalton bowlers were pleased that Boyd Wilson won the third’s prize at a recent all-day tournament at the club. A past president and former green superintendent of the club, he had not been in good health during the winter. He is able to play bowls again this summer, however, and should have a successful season. After a great deal of work during the off-season, the green superintendent (Mr E. Velvin) and members of the Christchurch club have produced the green in first-class condition for matches this season. The green is playing very well and the ends are holding out well. It is the best it has been for many years, according to the president of the club (Mr R. M. Adams). • „ One of the best performances in the Canterbury club fours championships recently was that of W. A. Young’s team which staged a good recovery to beat the strong four of J. A. Thomas. Young was well down on points mid-way through the game, but played consistently towards the end of the match. Another four in this championship, that of C. J. Beveridge, is playing well and still has two lives intact. A team of former West Coast bowlers recently beat the highlyregarded four skipped by J. Moloney in fours play at the Papanui club. The former West Coast players, G. Friend, B. Griffiths, R. Donovan, and L. Exton, won 2016, but then suffered a defeat at the hands of a team of comparative novices—G. French, L. Taylor. C. Maher, and A. Poyntz. This match resulted in a 14-20 win to Poyntz’s four. • Although they had a great deal of use during the last New Zealand championships in Christchurch, the United greens have recovered extremely well under the care of N. Dale, the club’s greenkeeper. He and his assistants put many hours of work into the two greens during the winter, and they are in very good. condition again this season.

One of the stalwart members of the Canterbury club, E. W. Packer, has achieved considerable success in the club championships recently with some very good bowling. One of his most recent successes was a win over C. King in the singles. Many new bowlers joined the Christchurch club at the beginning of this season and the early matches at the club have shown the high standard of play several of these men have attained. Two of the most notable of the new members are Jim Rennie, formerly of the Christchurch Working Men’s Club, and Trevor Frisk, who was previously a St. Martins bowler. i mi The four of Bert Manning suffered a surprisingly heavy defeat at the hands of a team skipped by W. Eadey in the Papanui club fours championship. This team, comprising I* Franks, W. Proctor, D. Donaldson and Eadey, won 23-12. However, the luck of the draw brought the two fours together again and in the second encounter Manning gained almost as convincing a win. His team played well and also had a little luck to win, 23-13. Six teams are now left in the fours championship and the strongest on paper are those skipped by J. Moloney, R. Ritchie and C. H. Manning. • Bowling fixtures arranged are:—Thursday, December 11: Beckenham floodlit tournament, United all day tournament, Saturday, December 13: Barnett Tiki at Christchurch, pennants, UndleyNeiii Cup at Greymouth.
