CLOTHING TRADE UNION
Mr R. A. Hill Succeeds Mr John Roberts
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 10.
Mr Roy A. Hill, of Dunedin, has been appointed secretary of the New Zealand Federated Clothing Trade Employees’ Industrial Association of Workers and secretary of the Canterbury Clothing Workers’ Union. He will take up his positions in Christchurch on February 9. He replaces Mr John Roberts, who has retired after 32 years in office.
Mr Hill is national president of the federation, a position he has held for the last eight years. He previously served as vice-presi-dent. He was appointed secretary of the Otago and Southland Clothing Trade Union 14 years ago on the amalgamation of the Dunedin Tailoresses’ Union with the Bespoke Tailors, Cutter, and Pressers’ Union. The Felt Hatters Union has subsequently joined the major body. With Mr Roberts, he has had the unusual distinction of holding office in the same year as provincial president of the Labour Representation Committee and the Trades Council. Mr Hill has been a member of the executive of the L.R.C. for 15 years and president for six years. He has served on the executive of the Trades Council for 14 years, seven of them as president, and is a foundation member and president of the New Zealand Safety Association. He has been a national councillor of the Federation of Labour for seven years and has been a Trades Council representative on many local organisations.
During the war, Mr Hill took a prominent part in patriotic work. Last year he made an investigatory visit ; tp the Cook Islands for the Federation of Clothing Trade Employees and reported on unsatisfactory working at RaTa|onga. He will be succeeded in Dunedin by Mr I. R. Powell, a cutter in the clothing trade, as secretary of the Otago and Southland Union.
