Rebate On 1958 Social Security Tax

Sir, —It appears that the Inland Revenue Department has no records of the amounts of Social Security tax paid by individuals in respect of the first year in which this tax was imposed. As it is unlikely that many taxpayers will have retained for 27 years their receipts for payment or other records from which tax was calculated, it would seem that few persons will be able to benefit from the alleged rebate.— Yours, etc., E.W.R. December 5, 1958. [The District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr N. A. Rowntree) said that the department had no records of the Unemployment Charge paid on the 1931 and 1932 incomes. However, it was prepared to consider granting a rebate in any case in which a taxpayer was able to produce reasonable evidence of his income for the years ended March 31, 1931, and 1932.]
