Jacobs’ House Centenary

The end-of-the-year house supper on Tuesday night at Jacobs’ House, one of the boarding establishments of Christ’s College, also marked a more important occasion—its hundredth anniversary. Although the present Jacobs’ House was opened in 1931, the first was built on the same site in 1858, taking its name from Dean Jacobs, the college’s first headmaster, who lived there. It was burned down in 1867 and replaced by another, so that the present one is the third on the same site. Up until 1931 the house went under many different names, following the custom in many English public schools of taking the house’s name from its housemaster.
