Acclimatisation Society Hopes To Import Brown Trout Ova
When trout in Lake Lyndon ’ were tagged last month and some fish transferred to Lake Pearson, , only four were lost, the North Canterbury Acclimatisation So- ’ ciety was told at its meeting last evening. A total of 213 rainbow trout, ranging in size from 4in to 15in, was transferred. Objections to the transfer of worm-infested fish from Lake Lyndon to other waters have been received by the society, and particular attention will be paid, at the .March netting, to examining fish for signs of worm infestation. The society will try to obtain nearly 2.000.G00 trout ova this season. Of these, some will come from the Deparment of Internal Affairs, at Turangi (250,000 brown trout ova and 1,000,000 rainbow trout ova), and an effort will be made to secure a non-remittance licence for the importation of 500.000 brown trout ova from Hobart. The society intends to ask the Marine Department to grant permission for extended fishing to be carried oiit during May, June, and July ny up to 30 anglers, in the Rakaia, Hurunui, and Waimakariri rivers. The committee has decided that all fresh swan eggs should be collected. About 50 bales of straw may be made available next season as nesting material. This year, when material was needed, the wet ground would not allow vehicles to take straw into the nesting area. Eleven hen pheasants and 27 cock pheasants have been re-1
i released this year, leaving 25 hens b and 10 cocks at the Greenpark i, game farm. More than 40 dozen i eggr have been sent to Mr K. Gib- - son, of Cust, for incubation. t All the pheasant chicks will be 7 inoculated against fowl pox on > hatching, and again when they are six weeks old. f Officers elected were:—Presia dent, Dr. D.
