Random Reminders ROSES

This summer, according to the home gardeners, has been a particularly good one for roses. Certainly a walk along a suburban street is extremely rewarding, with roses playing a prominent part in the general picture. There is no denying that the fragrance of the rose, and its colour, are highly attractive, but those who are at present without roses should not hasten to join the throng. Rose cultivation is a confusing business. There is the matter of their names, which are endless and often unpronounceable. Apparently a species of rose has been found for every person of note in recorded history, and a few who are not. Roses, too, are more demanding than impecunious relatives. They have to be pruned with the care a film star gives her manicure; they have to be staked and tied, sprayed with a variety of insecticides and generally fawned upon. And there has been no more accurate statement than the one which claims there is a thorn for every rose. There are other pursuits more rewarding than playing nursemaid to Paul Scarlett.
