Glacier To Go Into Dry Dock

The United States Navy’s biggest icebreaker, the Glacier, will go into dry dock at Wellington on December 20 to have new blades fitted to both propellers. Two blades on the port propeller were broken off during work in the pack-ice in McMurdo Sound a few weeks ago, .reducing the icebreaker’s power by 30 per cent. New blades have been brought out on the Wyandot, which arrived at Lyttelton yesterday, but as they are constructed of a different metal, new blades will have to be fitted on both propellers. The ship is expected to be in dry dock two days.
