Store Cattle The store cattle yarding of 366 head compared with 342 last week included a fair amount of cattle of indifferent quality. Although the sale was definitely not as free as it has been recently, values for good cattle were not much different from late rates, but for poorly-bred cattle there was an easing of about 20s to 30s a head. There was a sizeable selection of two-year-old steers which brought from £3O to £33 18s 6d for the best. Top price of £33 18s 6d went to A. L. and the estate of D. W. Hammond (Seddon) for nine Aberdeen Angus. Others made from £25 to £29 8s 6d. Yearling to 15 or 16 months old steers realised from £22 3s 6d to £26 13s 6d for the best on offer, with average at £lB 13s 6d to £2l 8s 6d, and others down to £l5 18s 6d. Dairy Cattle In the dairy cattle section there was an entry of about 40 head, including a compete herd of 23 Friesian and Aryshire cows. Twenty cows out of thia herd, which were In good milking order but not carrying surplus condition, realised from £23 to £33 and averaged about £29. Apart from these the cow entry comprised mainly Jersey or Jersey cross cattle and except for the best the market was not as good as last week, with values back up to 50s according to quality. Best second, third and fourth calvers realised from £25 to £3l, with an odd Friesian making to £5O, and the balance sold down to £23. There were few heifers in the offering and the best of these were traded at £36 to £46, with others down to £25. Vealers There was a full entry in the veal section made tip mainly of small and medium suckers and buc-ket-fed calves. These sold at prices on a par with last week. There was no surplus of good runners and these also sold at late rates. Extra prime large runners made from £24 Is to £2B 13s 6d. good runners from £2O Is to £23 18s 6d. medium runners £l7 Is to £l9 18s 6d; good suckers £l3 8s 6d to £l6 3s 6d, medium £lO Ils to £l3 0s; large calves, £ll 18s 6d to £l5 Is. medium £8 8s 6d to £ll 3s 6d. small calves, £6 Is to £8 8s 6d, and small and inferior and bobby calves down to 41s. Fat Pigs The porker entry was the largest for several weeks and included a fair proportion of plain and unfinished sorts. Best quality pigs maintained last week’s rates. but others were easier by 4s to 6s a head. Again the chopper entry was a heavy one, but values showed very little change. The bacon entry was larger, including one truck from the West Coast, and competition was keen at last week’s parity. Values were:— Plain and light porkers, £4 9s 6d to £4 18s 6d. Medium porkers, £5 16s 6d to £6 10s 6d. Heavy porkers, £7 2s 6d to £8 0s 6d. Light baconers, £8 2s 6d to £8 12s 6d. Medium baconers, £8 17s 6d to £9 9s 6d. Heavy baconers, £9 13s 6d to £lO Is 6d. Choppers, £5 18s 6d to £l3 18s 6d. Store Pigs The store pig entry was the largest for some considerable time and quality generally was very good. At the beginning of the sale the market eased by 4s to 8s a head, but it improved as it progressed and over the last two races was fully firm on last week. Small and rough weaners, 20s to 25s Best weanen, 33s to 455. Slips, 47s to 525. Small and medium stores, 55s to 655. I Large stores, to 80s.
