NO ‘PLAY-WAY’ TO EXAMINATIONS

College Chairman’s Warning

(New Zealand Press Association, MASTERTON, Dec. 10.

“There is no play-way to the passing of examinations,’’ Dr. H. L Palmer told the break-up gathering of Wairarapa College last night when criticising the mental outlook of pupils entering college from primary schools. Dr. Palmer, chairman of the college’s board of governors, said the average boy and girl came to the school completely unprepared for the standard required.

While he was not prepared to debate the pros and cons of primary education, he said the average pupil entering the college lacked the fundamentals of grammar and arithmetic. “What is worse, they lack the ability to concentrate, to channel their efforts to get the utmost results.” Dr. Palmer continued. “If you parents want your chtld to get School Certificate in three years it is up to you to ensure that he applies himself to the task. I know it has been said that all examinations should be abolished, but in my view examinations are merely training for the harder task to come,’ Dr. Palmer concluded.
